300-Year-Old Armenian Monastery To Wear Off In Kayseri

- In the Tomarza district of Kayseri province, the 300-year-old Armenian monastery of Surp Astvatsatsin (Tomarza Monastery) has merely survived with a few walls in ruins left.

The monastery located in Kayseri’s Cumhuriyet neighbourhood has reportedly failed to live through the corrosive years. In 1915, the monastery that was open to warship had been plundered and abandoned.

Despite its severe damage, right after the World War I, some Armenian priests had reinvaded and then had abandoned the monastery to its fate.

Historians tell that within the ruins of the monastery, a “Grogerian Armenian School” have hosted the ceremonies of "Oğlak Gıran" with the participation of Middle Anatolian, Lycian Armenians and other guests at the "Pasha Room" every year on August 12.

The Tomarza Church (Saint Bogos Bedros) also has a 300-year-long history and has managed to survive until today, said officials.
